Sports Analytics Conference Season

There is a lot happening in Sports Analytics at the moment. The Geekfest that is Sloan Sports Analytics has just ended but this side of the Atlantic the big conferences are happening in the next few months. I thought it would be a good idea to have a round-up of everything that is going.

Sports Analytics Conference – London

Sports Analytics Innovation SummitGoing on reports from last year – this conference is a serious player and might explain why very few clubs travelled to MIT Sloan this year. The list of speakers is impressive – which you can check out here. But talks such as the sample I have listed below looks like this could be a great day.

  • Impact of Sport Analytics on Performance, Sam Erith — Head of Sports Science at Man City FC
  • Determinants of Performance: The Framework for Training Intervention, Steve Ingham — Dir, Science & Tech Dev. at EIS
  • Developing a Technical Direction – from Concept to Reality, Stephen Aboud — Head of Technical Direction at IRFU
  • The Impact of Player Management and Monitoring Strategies on Team Sport Performance, Dave Hamilton — Dir, Performance Science at USA Field Hockey

Tickets for the event start at £400 and you can register here. The ticket includes video access to the talks should you want to recap.

MIT Sports Analytics Conference 2014

sloan-soccer-panelOk so this conference is now finished for another year. I attended last year and wrote about my experience here. If you couldn’t make it Boston they usually make the videos available a few weeks later. Ths year the videos are available straight away. They are charging – but only $30, which is cheap! As of now they aren’t available in Ireland (or I presume the UK) but I have asked them if or when this will be available. If you’re in a country that can get access – here is the link. http://www.youtube.com/user/42analytics

MOOC – Sabermetrics 101: Introduction to Baseball Analytics

sabr101x-sabermetrics-101-course-banner-608x211This is a free open online course starting in May. I appreciate Baseball is not everyone’s sport but could be really interesting and I’m sure there is something ot learn from the course.

This course will cover the theory and the fundamentals of the emerging science of Sabermetrics. We will discuss the game of baseball, not through consensus or a fan’s conventional wisdom, but by searching for objective knowledge in hitting, pitching, and fielding performance. These and other areas of sabermetrics will be analyzed and better understood with current and historical baseball data.

Full details can be found here; https://www.edx.org/course/bux/bux-sabr101x-sabermetrics-101-1558
