Book Reviews — By thevideoanalyst on January 4, 2011 5:04 pmFree Book Giveaway
I thought I would start the new year off by giving something away. It’s one of the books I recommended before Christmas ‘Wages of Wins’. I have just finished the sequel ‘Stumbling on Wins‘ and really loved it.
So to get the new year off with a freebie simply do the following for a chance to win the book.
Leave a comment below with your favourite sports book of all time. It doesn’t have to be about analysis – any sports book will do.
I’ll pick a winner on Friday and send you the book.

For me I’ve got to say Paul McGraths autobiography (think its called Oh Ah Paul McGrath), or The Damned United.
Favourite book……winning by Clive Woodward
my favourite book is “Women’s Rugby: Coaching and Playing the Collegiate Game”.
My favorite has to be “Blink” by Malcom Gladwell. while not a sports book, per se, it really opened my eyes to cognition and decision-making, particularly as it relates to sports.
My favorite book is Cross Over: The New Model of Youth Basketball Development by…me.
Nah, I would vote for The Art of Learning by Josh Waitzkin (chess and tai chi) or You haven’t taught until they have learned about the teaching practices of John Wooden.
John McEnroe- Serious. He’s very honest, entertaining, writes very well, and even his childhood is really interesting which is where lots of autobiographies can be a bit dull…..i’d definately recommend it
Slaying The Dragon – Michael Johnson. Great book on mental attitude in sport.
MONEYBALL by Michael Lewis. Opened my eyes to both the dedication and importance and of sports analysis and convinced me to undertake a degree in sport coaching – the best thing that I have done with my life so far.
Every second counts – Lance Armstrong – Epic !
Brian Glanville’s – Goalkeepers are Different
I read it as a young boy and lived out every page in my head. Innocent, compelling and totally absorbing. For years I thought it was a true story, and when I look back I realise that my teachers at primary school encouraged me to believe it was too.
I always wanted to be a goalkeeper. Never was.
Handbook of Soccer Match Analysis — C. Carling, A. Mark Williams and Thomas Reilly
In Black and White – The Jake White Story.
As Jake White was also a technical Analyst with the Springboks before he became the coach his whole coaching strategy was very technical.
A story about a lot of hard work en difficulties but with the right mindset and determination you will reach the top.
My favourite sports book has to be my first, Roy Keane’s autobiography, i remeber being quiet young at the time and it gave me a great insight into the world of professional sports, also being a cork woman it has to be my favouraite to date.
I would say that Brian Moore’s “Beware of the Dog: Rugby’s Hard Man Reveals All” would be my book of choice at the moment, a very honest insight into Brian Moore which allows his personality to be shown.
I would have to say ‘El Diego’, Maradona’s autobiography which i found to be a fascinating read! Especially his early years as a teenager trying to get into the national set-up and how he felt being left out of the 1978 world cup.
And the winner is…..
I used random.org to pick a number between 1 – 15 (the number of comments). The winner is number 10 which is Ed Burt. Congrats Ed. You should get an email from me to arrange delivery.
Thanks for entering everyone. I’ve added some of those books to my wish list.
I will be running more of these competitions throughout the year so stay tuned.
Mathew Syed – Bounce (The Myth of Talent and the Power of Practice)
It’s a must read!!
I know i am too late for the competition but you must read it if you havn’t!
